I am a counselor, coach, and collaborative participant in the lives of people who seek out my help. I listen, and have an opinion, but most importantly, I listen to your opinion. Sometimes, people find themselves stuck in a part of their lives that just keeps resisting change. They need an independent observer to help pry them from the restraints of old, less preferable habits. Other times, people want to build upon a foundation that is already working. To me, this is the distinction between therapy and coaching.
Psychotherapy helps to lay a new foundation in place of one that does not seem strong enough to withstand immediate building. In such cases, we will work to strengthen that infrastructure. However, not all counseling requires such a “retrofit”.
When my clients and I choose coaching, we are going forward, moving towards a goal, and are very active in the process. Both forms of counseling are solution-oriented. And, solution-oriented counseling provides change and results.
